Sakha and Azad Foundation curated a systemised training programme, called ‘Women With Wheels’ aimed at overall development of the women trainees. This training incorporates both, technical driver’s training, as well as other life skills training,to create mobility, remunerative income, as well as a sense of identity for these women.

Driving is generally considered as male’s occupation. Women, therefore constitute a challenge to the gendered notions of work and skills. The comprehensive training empowers women to overcome structural barriers and effectively negotiate with a range of stakeholders at home, community, market and state.

The Training consists of 3 modules

1

Technical Skill Training

This training aims at teaching women not just the technicalities of car driving, but also technicalities of car as well. The component focuses on training women to become safe and efficient drivers who have sufficient knowledge about traffic rules, road signs and the road network. The training starts with learner’s module followed by month-long driving training. Post this, trainees are given sufficient driving practice encompassing 3 different modules – ground practice, on-road practice and Self-driving practice. Training is also provided on car maintenance as well as road/route identification and Map reading.

2

Self-Development Module

This has formed an integral component of the training module as recognising ‘self’ and evolving from the social and cultural constraints that have been subjected to women over the years, is equally important.  It not only helps them feel empowered, but also builds confidence and grooms them to become professional chauffeurs.  The training involves components such as communication skills, Work preparedness, English speaking, Self-defence and first aid. The overall effect of this training is that women feel a change in their personal skills, they feel confident to interact with all clients – national or international; as well as develop faith and confidence to tackle any situation. There is a dynamic shift in their thinking and behaviour, which provides them an edge in the employment market.

3

Women Empowerment Module

This module was necessary to bring about an attitudinal change among women trainees towards Gender discrimination and normalisation of the same by the society. Women learn about their legal rights and justice such as dowry laws, sexual harassment at workplace laws, difference between official laws and customs or traditions, how to file FIR etc. Additionally, they also learn about sexual and reproductive health and other aspects to articulate their own experiences in denial of rights and violence, and seek support in addressing the same. This is a highly sensitive module which is delivered from a rights-based perspective, with a focus on empowering women to become drivers of their own lives, to logically understand and critically think on these aspects.
